“For as churning cream produces butter, and as twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife.”

The same Hebrew word is used for churning, twisting and stirring up. It is the word “Mits” which literally means pressure. All of these were examples in Solomon’s day of applying increasing degrees of pressure. Intentionally and unfairly applying great pressure to someone, their family, their career or any other part of their life can cause great anger that results in an altercation or brokenness. This can be how a divorce happens. It can also be how a physical fight gets started. Solomon’s description shows escalating pressure. It starts out productive. As I prepare for our biggest annual event next Monday I am feeling what has been a gradually intensifying degree of pressure. This pressure is healthy for me as it gets me more focused on putting the pieces in place to help the event be as impactful as possible. In this verse the pressure quickly moves to painful and bloody. Not helpful. Finally it’s destructive, not just to the one feeling it most intensely but to the one causing it and quite possibly anyone else who encounters the person feeling the pressure. Pressure can start out healthy but without wise observation or because of intentional evil desire it can break the target of the strife. Today be a peace maker and protect the innocent. #BeTheEdge
