When I grew up trolls were “a being in Nordick folklore. In Old Norse sources, beings described as trolls dwell in isolated areas of rocks, mountains, or caves, live together in small family units, and are rarely helpful to human beings.” (Wikipedia) Over the years they became ugly little dolls (valuable collectibles these days) and even lovable Disney movie characters. Since social media emerged a new definition of troll has become known. An internet troll “is defined as antagonizing others online by deliberately posting inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive comments or other disruptive content. Internet trolls aim to provoke an emotional response and are trying to engage in a fight or argument”. (MIT) They represent the antithesis of Solomon’s counsel in this verse. Solomon never imagined social media but he knew this type of person and gave a clear distinction between them and God’s followers. There are plenty of people who speak first and think through what they said after. They speak hurtful, destructive and, at times, vile words. They are harsh at times even if they are speaking truth. There is no place for that. I believe there is never a time an adult should ever yell at another adult. Seldom should they yell at a child. If you are tempted to yell at someone consider Solomon’s counsel to speak gently and rationally. He reminds us that the results are peace making and powerful.
