“that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge.”

One of the signs of a wise person is their ability to use discretion. The dictionary defines discretion as “the quality of behaving or speaking in such a way as to avoid causing offense or revealing private information.” That’s the kind of person I enjoy being around. In fact, it’s something I look for in all my closest friendships. Another translation describes this as maintaining mindfulness, which I really like. It allows wisdom to permeate all of our interactions and thoughts. It points to a constant awareness and builds character in both thought and, consequently, actions. It is a gift—a byproduct of giving free rein to the indwelling Holy Spirit. Over time, we begin to think and act with what Paul and the early fathers referred to as the “aroma of Christ.” Maintaining discretion leads to the next step, which is keeping our mouths under control so that Kingdom knowledge is shared where it will be understood and have an impact. Today, be the aroma. #BeTheEdge
