“Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?”

Of course, the answer is no. In this section of scripture, Solomon is again warning in the strongest terms possible about the dangers of adultery. He explains that there is no escaping the husband’s wrath. The broader truth from this verse is that all sin—not just sexual sin—ultimately hurts the sinner. The most obvious and, dare I say, saddest example is those who die in their sin. The capital ‘S’ Sin is what we enter the world with: separation from our Creator God, a result of the original sin caused by the rebellion of the first couple, Adam and Eve. For those of us who have had that sin, and all our small ‘s’ sins, removed by our Savior, there is still a price to be paid when we willfully walk in sin. The need to confess and repent regularly of our sinful acts is imperative to our daily walk with God. When we harbor sin in our lives, we live in a broken relationship where God chooses not to hear our prayers. The pain of fire in our lap may seem intense, and it is, but the despair and emptiness of walking out of fellowship with God is a deeper and darker pain than any other we can experience. It is that emptiness and awareness of missing the intimacy we experience when we are right with Him that drives us to turn from our sin and return to Him.
