“The leech has two daughters. ‘Give! Give!’ they cry. “There are three things that are never satisfied, four that never say, ‘Enough!’:”
Every commentary I consulted made it clear that the leech symbolizes insatiable greed; it can never get enough. This leech feeds on cows, sucking their blood. Left to its own devices, it would eventually kill its host and still not be satisfied until it died itself. That paints a desperate picture of a bleak scenario. The next verse describes four more insatiable appetites that are never satisfied. The pursuit of sin causes a similar response. The law of diminishing returns tells us that whatever you think is satisfying will leave you wanting more the next time. Drug abusers experience this, as it takes increasingly larger amounts of the drug to achieve the same high. Pain medications often have the same diminishing effect. I’ve counseled too many people who thought they could dabble in certain sins only to be drawn deeper into their snare. Even playful forms of gambling can lead to addiction. Similarly, engaging with horror movies can pull some into the realm of the demonic. Today, avoid even the appearance of evil. #BeTheEdge
