“To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.”
In over a decade of doing these devotions on the Proverbs, I have, like with all the chapters, read this one at least 12 times a year, which adds up to over 120 times. Not once have I read this verse without it hitting me in a powerful way. Reflecting back, I’ve written on it at least a dozen times. Although doing what is right and just often requires sacrifices, it doesn’t feel as difficult as sacrificing for the sake of sacrifice alone. Dieting to lose weight or improve health is hard but can be very rewarding, or frustrating. Dieting just because it’s the latest fad, however, becomes more difficult over time. Why would anyone want to do that? Almost everything we do has a purpose, whether good or bad. But being motivated by God’s Spirit and truth to do justice and act rightly is both powerful and fulfilling. Even if the outcome is not what we hope for or expect, the very act of obedience, done for the right reasons, is rewarding. Today, live as a child of God and do justice. #BeTheEdge
