“Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish!”
This verse has always intrigued me. As a confirmed non-drinker, I’ve felt little need to truly understand it. The concept of giving alcohol to anyone at any time has always struck me as unusual. I’m not one to decide whether drinking is right or wrong for others. For me, it falls under the principle in the Hebrews passage that God is responsible for His servants (always a good idea), and that each person should be convinced in their own mind. What adds depth to this scripture is the fact that my family has experienced deep grief in the past few weeks. Often, when there is loss, people bring food and drinks. It has been no different for us. Many wonderful people have blessed us with an abundance of food and even a cooler of beer. I’ve seen how beer—and even wine—has eased some people’s life-crushing grief. Others have found moments of levity. I, too, have found comfort in the company of dear friends and family, yet I understand the attraction of those substances to others. This devotion may leave you with as many questions as answers—maybe even more. I do not make blanket statements about things God is often vague on. I don’t drink, but some of the godliest Christians I know do. What I am confident of is that none of them would drink and drive. None become violent or abusive. Maybe some occasionally do ease their pain or temper their grief. This passage specifically deals with drinking, which in some ways was very different in Solomon’s day. It’s also about not allowing anything to interfere with your relationship with God. Today, let us judge less and walk closely with our God. #BeTheEdge
