“Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.”
Over the years, I have watched many people grab a pen and, lacking anything else, write a note or number on their hand. They wanted it handy (yes, pun intended) or in a place where it couldn’t be lost or thrown away. Obviously, it was something important they didn’t want to lose. In church yesterday I saw my 11 year old granddaughter grab a pen and start writing in the palm of her hand the four points the pastor mentioned for kids to remember. BibleRef highlights a similar point Solomon makes to his son, using the “symbolic writing surface on the heart. At one point in Western culture, it was common to tell people to ‘tie a string around your finger’ as a reminder. Since it was easily noticeable, it helped keep the reminder at the forefront of the person’s mind.” This is the same spirit in which Solomon speaks to his son—urging him not to forget his wise sayings. I have a great friend who wears rubber bracelets on his wrist with scripture verses on them. When asked about them, he explains the value of the verse and the importance of keeping it in their mind. The Edge offers similar wristbands with Proverbs 27:17 to remind us that we are all here to help one another become better followers of Christ. Take hold of a verse and let it sink deep into your spirit. #BeTheEdge
