“The poor and the oppressor have this in common: The Lord gives sight to the eyes of both.”
Ever notice how the blind people Jesus healed were always poor? Obviously, they would have had a difficult time working and earning a living in His day. It was also often thought, erroneously, that they or someone in their lineage caused their blindness through sin. This verse is not specifically about blindness, but it does remind us that the only sight-giver in Scripture or biblical history is God. To the Jews of Jesus’ day, they understood that healing the sight of the blind was a messianic miracle—only the coming Savior would be able to do that. When Jesus opened the eyes of the blind, those watching knew exactly what it meant and who He was. Every other miracle Jesus performed was done by others in the Old Testament, except giving sight to the blind. That was reserved for the Savior. There is a lot of blindness in the world today—figuratively. Many people live their lives in willful ignorance of who God is, or even that He exists. They roam through life believing they are enlightened, only to miss the main point—or person. They find comfort in their darkness and have no idea of the beauty that exists in the world of walking in the light of God’s presence. As in the days of old Jesus remains the only one who can truly give sight to the blind. Today, walk with your eyes wide open. #BeTheEdge
