“The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.”

Theologians almost universally agree that the King Lemuel in this verse refers to Solomon. The title means “dedicated to God.” His mother would remind him that he was the blessing God sent her and David to recognize their repentance for their sin. This is just one example of many places in scripture where a name or title is loaded with meaning. Perhaps the best example is the name Jesus, which means “Yahweh saves” or “Yahweh is salvation.” It comes from the Hebrew name Yeshua, which is a combination of the name Yahweh and the verb yasha. Yahweh is the name of Israel’s God, and yasha means “rescue,” “deliver,” or “save.” How great is that? I’m not sure which meaning I prefer. I guess it depends on my need at the time, but “rescue” is probably one I turn to most often. Most parents look up the meaning of a name before they decide it is fit for their newborn child. For years, the Catholic Church would not allow parents to name their child anything that was not a saint’s name. Hence, I’m Kevin and not Roy. Titles and names can say a lot. I’m always intrigued by the fact that after watching the followers of Jesus act so much like Him, they began to refer to them as “little Christs” — Christians. The name stuck. Today, live up to the name of your Savior, Jesus. #BeTheEdge
