“For understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.”
Bible Ref tells us that “the first purpose of this book is to present sound teaching”. That shouldn’t be too difficult. Yet it can be. Today, as throughout history, many people bring their personal wants and needs into their teachings. Often, they are unaware of the biases that shape how they interpret God’s word. This is very dangerous. At best, it can lead us to live based not on the pure truth of scripture, but on a distorted version influenced by personal agendas. The best preachers and teachers I’ve learned from are those who quickly encourage their listeners to verify everything they say with the rest of the Bible, other respected teachers, and in the quiet of our hearts with the Holy Spirit. This approach brings a level of safety to our spiritual growth in Christ. Sadly, there are some poor examples of Christians in the world who do more harm than good for God and His kingdom by living a distorted truth. These would likely be the ones Gandhi was referring to when he said, “I’d be a Christian if it weren’t for the Christians.” That’s tragic but, in a sense, a foolish reason to miss out on God’s eternal gift. Proverbs helps us discern right teaching, and godly followers of Christ reflect the true God we serve. Today, seek to discern His truth and reflect it to a hungry and lonely world. #BeTheEdge
