Prior to the resurrection, there was no indwelling Holy Spirit. Slow down, read that again, and ponder it for a moment. As followers of Christ, we have never lived without the power and presence of God in our very souls. The pre-resurrection world knew no such reality. When we need to hear from God, we don’t need to cast lots, lay out fleece, or rely on anything external. We need to enter the Holy place of God and stand before His throne, standing on the powerful name of His Son, asking and listening. That is a phenomenal truth that most of us struggle to comprehend at the most basic level, let alone at the true depth of its eternal reality. Even more importantly, we have His written word to inform and guide us through life’s questions. In the days before the indwelling Holy Spirit, this practice did acknowledge, as we do today, that nothing is left to chance.
