“Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference between right and almost right.”
— Charles Spurgeon

Once you have witnessed truly discerning individuals in action, you will be awed. Interestingly, they seldom know how significant and rare their gift is. Without delving too deeply, David A. Bednar, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, has taught that “the gift of discernment can help us (1) ‘detect hidden error and evil in others,’ (2) ‘detect hidden errors and evil in ourselves,’ (3) ‘find and bring forth the good that may be concealed in others,’ and (4) ‘find and bring forth the good that may be concealed in pus” (“Quick to Observe,” Liahona, Dec. 2006, 19). Now, that’s a great gift, both in the Church and in business. It’s also helpful in families, friendships, and just about any other setting in life. Learning both the Bible and how to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit is key. Recognizing and surrounding yourself with people who are gifted in this area is also critical. I have a group of men and women I lean heavily on for these insights. Their input often reaches the point of divine revelation. It never contradicts Scripture but aligns seamlessly with it. When I choose a church, I always spend some time with the pastor because I need them to be one of those discerning voices in my journey. If you ask any of them—both pastors and friends—from the past 50 years, they will tell you that it has not been often, but I consistently sought out their counsel at critical moments on important issues in my journey. Anything from marriage and parenting to money, staff, or board issues has called for their discerning voices. Today, keep discerners nearby. #BeTheEdge
