“The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old.”
One of the most difficult things about this verse is for the two to appreciate each other and the different places they are in life. It can be a struggle to receive what the other has to offer with grace. The young look at the gray hair and are not even sure it’s worth anything. Let’s face it: most of us gray-heads grew up without the “benefits” of the tech world, so at times, we may diminish its value. This can feel personal. On the other hand, the young can be so engaged in their high-tech world that they lose sight, if they ever had it, of the value of personal, eye-to-eye interaction. The truly wise discover the intrinsic value of both when seen in proper balance. I feel a certain legitimacy speaking for the young, in that I once was one. I’m certainly in a place of understanding for the gray-heads — I am one. When I was young in ministry, I was so much smarter and cooler than the old guys. Boy, did that look awful in practice. It led to many return trips to seek forgiveness and reconciliation. There is great value in young ideas and energy. Too often, the older folks are intimidated or just plain annoyed by that. That’s a shame. So, these are a lot of words to say we need to appreciate Solomon’s insight: strength and wisdom make a great combo—powerful and often unstoppable. Today, ignore the tyranny of the ‘or’ while embracing the genius of the ‘and’. #BeTheEdge
