“Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?”
I never really cared for rhetorical questions. Ask a question or make a statement, but asking a question with a fairly obvious answer and not expecting a response feels kind of smart-alecky to me. In this verse, it is used as a way for Solomon to encourage others to pursue wisdom. He goes on to tell us that wisdom makes herself readily available. Sometimes, when I write these brief devotions, I want to be rhetorical because Solomon has made the same point simply and regularly throughout the brief 31 chapters of this book. There is a lot of depth in Solomon’s wisdom, but he also keeps truth very accessible at the same time. Jesus makes this point as well, yet no one would ever truly doubt the theological depth available in His teachings. The Gospel can be grasped by children yet continues to consume scholars’ efforts. There is no excuse for missing His simple invitation for salvation or for continuing to dig deeply into eternal places of mystery. Today, be a student. #BeTheEdge
