“The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.”
Detest is a strong emotion. The dictionary simply defines it as ‘to despise intensely.’ Another source puts it this way: ‘to feel abhorrence of; hate; dislike intensely.’ Obviously, you and I don’t want the Lord detesting anything about us. Here, Solomon zeros in on dishonesty. I have to admit that I find myself detesting dishonesty too, especially when it is used to take advantage of another person. In this verse, it is about dishonest business practices used against the unsuspecting or those without the knowledge to protect themselves. The obvious examples in our culture are used car dealers or car repair shops. Thankfully, these are not legitimate examples with The Edge partner companies. The reality is that every industry has the potential to take advantage of customers. A proper understanding of what it means to be a follower of God and how He feels about dishonesty eliminates the issue. When we walk in alignment with God and His call on our lives, we are the most honest business people, coaches, parents, and friends. No one needs to fear the follower of Christ. At least, they shouldn’t. A couple of decades ago, I removed a few phrases from my speech. I never start a sentence with ‘honestly,’ ‘to be honest,’ or ‘to tell the truth’ or anything else like that. It took a lot of effort. As followers of Christ, those expressions should be understood. We should always be truthful, and our yes should mean yes and our no should mean no. Today, be honest. #BeTheEdge
